Islandwide Transport Master Plan

Have you ever wonder how our future island transport system layout will be like? With the initial of only 5 Northern station (Yio Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Braddell & Toa Payoh) in 1987 to current 51 station all over Singapore major estate & Circle Line under construction, the future of it is not hard to imagine.

After checking out the Master plan on the right, do you have the feeling of being lost when transfering within the MRT system? With the MRT branched so nicely covering all major & new estates, is there still a need to own a car? or even taking other public transport like Taxi & Buses?

Parallel Parking

Parallel parking is a method of parking a vehicle in line with other parked cars. Cars parked in parallel are in one line, parallel to the curb, with the front bumper of each car facing the back bumper of an adjacent one.

In this high vehicles density nation, to be able to park in a parallel spot arms you with better chances of getting a lot, but drivers usually turn a blind eye to the one & only parallel parking lot when there's no vertical lots available. They would rather wait than to try parallel parking.

Parallel parking is considered by many to be one of the hardest skills for new drivers to learn. Well, nothing is perfect without trying & failing. Failure prepares you for the next try, so keep trying..

Procedure for entering a Parallel parking space

Ensure that your desired parking space is about 1 meters longer than your vehicle (although some highly skilled drivers are capable of parking in spaces that are within 0.3m of their vehicle length. A skilled driver can also park in space that the car barely fits, by going back and forth once the car's tail is in).

Line up your vehicle beside the vehicle in front of the parking space.

Turn the steering wheel one turn towards the curb and put your car into reverse.

Back up the vehicle so that your rear bumper is first to enter the parking space.

Once the vehicle is at 45° to the parking spot, slow down and turn the steering wheel all the way, to the road side.

Continue backing up until the rear of the vehicle is near the curb.

Gradually turn the steering wheel towards the curb to curve your vehicle into a straight position.

Brake once your vehicle occupies the middle of the parking space.



It is generally considered being rude, if you do not leave sufficient space for neighbouring vehicles to steer out of the parallel parking line, to park too far from the curb, or to leave too much space between you and the neighboring vehicles. So, take your time & park it well.

Fuel-Frugal Secrets

Tint THE windows
It cuts off daytime heat to your car interior and reduces the workload on your air-conditioning unit.

Open windows are a drag
At speeds faster than 50kmh, open windows increase wind drag and fuel wastage. To cool off alternatively, run your climate system on “outside” air and crank the window just a tiny bit.

Maintenance is key
Service the engine, tyre pressure, wheel alignment, filters etc as they contribute to the fuel efficiency of the car. For example, flat tyres use more fuel; setting the pressure slightly higher can save a penny or two.

Choose the right oils
Unless you are driving a high-performance fast car, you only need the cheaper 95 or 98 octane variations. “Premium” octane does not mean it is a “better” performer.

Switch off the engine when stationary
Today’s fuel injection engines do not need warming up (but go easy on the pedal till the car is nicely purring). If you are stopping for more than a minute, shut off the engine. Restarting consumes much less than idling. And that is why a hybrid electric-petrol car like the new Lexus RX 400H automatically shuts off the engine when the car is not moving, saving fuel in city traffic.

Avoid rough roads
Dirt or gravel on uneven roads that are under construction can waste up to 30 per cent of your petrol!

Park in reverse so you can easily drive out
Reversing chomps gas.

Push off slowly, drive smoothly and brake gently
The more you accelerate hard and brake sharply, the more petrol your car guzzles. Travelling at 90kmh as opposed to 110kmh can reduce consumption by up to 25 per cent. If your full tank is $60, then you’ve saved an extra $15 by observing the legal limit.

Don’t yo-yo on the accelerator
Don’t pump on the pedal in a jerky manner (notice how your speed needle fluctuates up and down). Use the cruise control feature to maintain speed and petrol cost.

Don’t flog that Aircon
The average car with aircon uses 20 per cent more juice. Cool it down a little before flipping the aircon button when you get in.
