Microsoft Reveals New Windows Mobile 6

Latest software to feature new messaging tools, tighter security and improved productivity features; devices to begin shipping worldwide by second quarter of 2007.

Microsoft Corp unveiled Windows Mobile® 6 on Feb 12, the newest version of its mobile software platform. By improving usability and adding support for Microsoft® Office features previously available only on PCs, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 delivers to the small screen a familiar and rich experience that meets the needs of work and life while on the go, all with a single device.

Windows Mobile 6 delivers the ability to view e-mails in their original rich HTML format with live links to Web and SharePoint® sites, which means text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, and are available from a corporate e-mail server such as Exchange Server 2007, from Web-based accounts such as Windows Live™ Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers. Windows Mobile 6 also includes Windows Live for Windows Mobile, which provides customers with a rich set of Windows Live services. For example, now through Windows Live Messenger, people can chat with more than one person at one time, express themselves through animated figures, quickly send a file or image, or record and send voice notes.

The newest version of the platform offers the most genuine Microsoft Office system experience in the mobile versions of Office Outlook®, Office Word, Office Excel® and Office PowerPoint® by bringing capabilities once available only on the PC versions of these products to the small screen. This allows users to neatly view, navigate and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets in their original formatting, without affecting tables, images or text, and to view PowerPoint presentations on their device.

All Windows Mobile 6 powered devices include Direct Push Technology for up-to-date e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars, tasks and contacts through Microsoft Exchange Server. Dopod's upcoming devices to support Windows Mobile 6

Not that this is anything spectacular, basically most of us expected it anyway but Dopod International Corp, a share of HTC selling HTC devices under its own brand in Far and South East Asia, recently announced its support of Windows Mobile 6 as a software platform in its new products. Dopod International plans to launch its first device running on Windows Mobile 6 in April 2007. All new products launched after that will also be equipped to run on this new mobile software platform.
This announcement is in line with Microsoft's recent launch of Windows Mobile 6, the newest version of its mobile software platform which features new messaging tools, tighter security and improved productivity.

Windows Live Messenger & Mobile Beta

Microsoft is currently working on Windows Live Messenger Mobile client for Windows Mobile devices and while everything was under Beta testing, Microsoft has allowed the current Beta users to publish more information and screenshots.

What's the Windows Live Messenger Mobile all about? Well, basically it's the mobile device counterpart of Microsoft's new Windows Live Messenger for PCs which will replace the current Windows XP Messenger as well as the MSN Messenger clients to unify the messaging experience under one umbrella - Windows Live. The current version, which is available to a closed user group only, is an early Beta build and therefore far away from how it will works in the final version and since it is such an early Beta, it is still buggy.

But still, it provides a good preview as to how Microsoft will continue with its Windows Live Messenger strategy and it includes some features which Windows Mobile MSN Messenger user waited for ages:

Windows Live Messenger Mobile
- Emoticons aka smiles in chats
- Transfer files from and to your mobile device, including recording a voice clip
- using your device microphone and send pictures with your device camera
- Click on a contact to check out their contact card Live Contacts details and Live blog

Windows Live Client
- Open Windows Live Messenger
- Reading RSS Feeds
- Local Live Search
- Accessing your E-Mails from one single interface

The installation for now, can only be done on the device main memory which I guess most of us won't have much left. There's no option to select the storage card as an installation option yet. After the installation, you get two new icons in the Start menu, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Mobile.

Windows Live Mobile is a complete new way to handle future Windows Live services and allows you at the moment to perform several tasks like:
- Opening Windows Live Messenger
- Read news and own news sources (coming from RSS feeds)
- Doing Windows Live Local Search
- Viewing Windows Live Messenger contacts which synchronize with Outlook
- Reading/opening all E-Mails, SMS and MMS from one unified interface:

The Windows Live Messenger mobile provides a similar user interface as the client but with added feature not found in the previous version of Mobile Messenger:
- Similar client contacts overview
- Either grouped by Online/Offline status or grouped Groups
- Smiley chat icon
- Sending images and files

Windows Live Mobile Beta is not available to public yet but you may download here & register for the Windows Live Mobile Beta Here. Registering for the Beta doesn't means you will be added to the Beta tester group but it's the only official way to get it at the moment.

Microsoft hasn't given any planned release dates yet but stay tune as we might be able to get our hands on it within this year.

Web Address Book

Came across this "Web Address Book" application provided by fellow forum mate. It is a database system whereby you can create records to keep track of the URLs that you have registered as members. As there are many sites that require you to create user names, passwords and email addresses, sometimes keep track of the information can be a chore.

Usually we're not so lucky to be able to use the same user name in some of them or what email addresses you have used to communicate with let alone the passwords.

For those that don't really trust the IE auto complete function, due to the security risks and vulnerabilities, this may be a good alternative. It's FREE to use. No gimmicks or entrapments. All data is stored in your harddisk. You can also print a list and search by filtering, too.

They created this program for their own use but would like to share it and hope that it may be of use to others. Do give it a try & feedback, good or bad so that they can plan if this program has any future release. It's definitely not the best but it is functional.

Windows Vista

Windows XP may not be dead, but it is now officially on life support as the new-generation Vista takes over the throne. Though the Vista Business Edition has been available for enterprise customers since November last year, today is the day when consumers can put their paws on the various flavors of the operating system.

Windows Vista is Microsoft's first new operating system in more than five years and the successor to Windows XP. However, it is not worth rushing out to purchase. If you desperately need to buy a new PC (if your old one died or you've been waiting and waiting for Vista to be released), then by all means do so; there's nothing wrong with Windows Vista. But there's no one compelling feature within Windows Vista that cries out to switch over, neither the enhanced graphic capabilities (Aero) nor the improved system performance features (truthfully, our Windows XP doesn't crash). As for security, Microsoft's biggest improvements in Windows Vista are within the Enterprise or 64-bit editions, editions most home users will not be running. Windows Vista is not the Apple Mac OS X 10.4 killer one hoped for or feared. Nor are there specific big-name software packages written exclusively for Windows Vista--most software available today is compatible with both Windows XP and Windows Vista. But the extensive tie-ins to Microsoft.com and Live.com, and the many, many interdependences upon Internet Explorer 7 left us desperately wanting more alternatives. Hardcore Microsofties who live and breathe within the MSN, Live.com, and Microsoft desktop software ecosystem will rejoice with the release of Windows Vista, but for the rest of us who are product agnostic, who use Firefox, Google Desktop, ZoneAlarm, GMail, and Corel WordPerfect, Windows XP SP2 will suffice nicely until some killer program necessitates that we all upgrade to Windows Vista.

Windows Vista Home Basic Edition

The Vista Basic Edition is for machines which do not meet the minimum specifications for the Aero Desktop experience and used mainly for surfing the Internet.

The good: Windows Vista Home Basic does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; and Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.

The bad: Windows Vista Home Basic does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); no Aero graphics system in Home Basic; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from IE7 get preferential treatment); and little reason to leave Windows XP.

The bottom line: Windows Vista Home Basic is essentially warmed-over Windows XP, Windows XP SP3. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use.

Windows Vista Home Premium Edition

The Home Premium version of the OS provides all the eye candy of the new software together with a revamped Media Center experience.

The good: Windows Vista Home Premium does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; and Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.

The bad: Windows Vista Home Premium does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); Tablet PC support unnecessary; fax and scan support missing; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.

The bottom line: Windows Vista Home Premium is essentially warmed-over Windows XP Home Edition. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista Home Premium is stable enough for everyday use.

Windows Vista Business Edition

The Vista Business Edition adds advanced backup features as well as remote desktop support.

The good: Windows Vista Business does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; and Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.

The bad: Windows Vista Business does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); no BitLocker drive encryption; no DVD Maker; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.

The bottom line: Windows Vista Business is essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use.

Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

The top-of-the-line Vista Ultimate has all the perks from the other versions and also throws in Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption to secure your private data.

The good: Windows Vista Ultimate does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; Windows Vista offers better built-in support options.

The bad: Windows Vista Ultimate does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); there's simply too much and not all of it is implemented properly; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.

The bottom line: Windows Vista is essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. On the other hand, if you need a new computer right now, Windows Vista is stable enough for everyday use.

Registering CE-Star 2.8 for WM5 on O2 Xda Atom

If you own O2 Xda Atom Pocket PC Phone Windows Mobile, there is a problem that causes soft keypad cannot be used, due to O2 Atom’s driver has defections which make the input method editor non-switchable. Registering CE-Star beyong trial period
1. Launch CE-Star from Start -> Programs -> Register.
2. In the Register Key box, enter the registration code: F46ZMMHJ40QY-AGZ1
3. Click Yes when prompted the need to restart.
4. Don’t restart, instead power off the Atom.
5. Power on the Atom (The process is to make the registration permanent).
6. Check the registration key is registered by clicking About at CE-Star.

Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications

Microsoft has released WGA Notifications application which effectively turned Microsoft Windows operating system into a ‘nagware’, with a “This copy of Windows is not genuine” warning. What the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application does what it will check your Microsoft Windows XP validity. If it found that the copy of Windows XP is not validated, not genuine, counterfeit, unlicensed, pirated, illegal, unauthorised or simply failed the Windows Genuine Advantage validation process, then the notification messages will appear at various places and time.

When you log on to a non-genuine copy of Windows XP, the following notification error message “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will pop-up on the logon process, and they nicely said “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting” message on the bottom right corner of log-in screen.

Microsoft allows Windows faithfuls to have 2 options: Get Genuine or Resolve Later. Click on Resolve Later will temporarily bypass the notification and let you login into and use Windows nagged with notification icon and messages, which will randomly appear as balloon notification message with an icon in the notification area (system tray).

Clicking on the balloon notification or the notification area icon will lead you to the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Failure Web page that contains the specifics of the validation failure and the steps that you can take to make the operating system genuine.

To get rid of the WGA notifications that intends to remind you that your Windows is not validated, you can buy a validly licensed OEM copy of genuine Microsoft Windows from Sim Lim or Funan, but if you don't intend to, maybe the following will helps.

Steps to remove WGA notifications
1. Delete/Rename WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.
2. Delete/Rename WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.
3. Lauch RegEdit, browse to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
4. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents
5. Reboot Windows XP.

iDA Wireless@SG Program - IN2015 Project

Wireless@SG is a wireless broadband programme developed by IDA as part of its Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure initiative. It will be run and developed in the next two years by three local wireless operators who will deploy a wireless broadband network in Singapore. Users can enjoy free, both in-door and outdoor seamless wireless broadband access with speeds of up to 512kbps at most public areas. The targeted users of this wireless broadband network are broadly classified as "people on the move" - people who require wireless broadband access while away from their homes, schools and offices. These include students, tourists, business travellers and enterprise users such as insurance agents and real estate agents who use widely-available and wireless-enabled devices such as notebook PCs and PDAs. Once connected, users will be able to access all Internet-based services e.g. online gaming, web surfing, instant messaging, VoIP and email.

To connect to the Wireless@SG wireless broadband network, a user just needs a WiFi-enabled device, such as a laptop computer or a PDA, a web browser, and a registered Wireless@SG account. With this registered account, the user is able to roam within any of Wireless@SG's coverage areas, regardless of the operators' network.

Wireless@SG is powered by the network of three wireless operators: iCell, QMax and SingTel. It will be provided free for the first 2 years. Beyond that, the three operators may consider extending the free periods should there be a strong public interest for it.
